Rugby and District

We are probably the smallest branch of the eight in Warwickshire, now with 48 members. Nonetheless, we are a friendly and lively association and meet the third Wednesday of each month, from September to April, at Friends Meeting House (see Branch Location below) when we have interesting talks from visiting experts on any number of beekeeping topics. During the remaining months, we plan to get together at our branch apiary on most Saturday afternoons to conduct various necessary manipulations of the bee colonies.

For those who are interested in starting the immensely satisfying hobby of beekeeping, we have for the past two years (2010 and 2011) conducted a beginners’ beekeeping course in the Spring. This has been an opportunity for those interested in beekeeping to meet others with the same interest, when over a sequence of seven talks by a team of experienced beekeepers, we provided sufficient information to enable each one to decide whether beekeeping was really for them. This was followed by two opportunities to actively participate in handling bees at our branch apiary. The two courses resulted in a big increase in our member numbers, with the result that our experienced members have not been able to give sufficient of their time to the new beginners when it is most needed, that is in their first year of beekeeping. We have decided therefore to correct this by holding our complete beginners' course in alternate years, thus allowing us to concentrate help in the 'off' years to the beginners. The biennial course will be limited to a maximum of 20 beginners in order to ensure the right amount of personal contact for you with our beekeepers and the guest speakers. In the alternate years, starting 2012, we plan to hold a one day (Sunday) 'taster course' for up to 50 attendees. Strange though it may seem, we plan to hold this in the November prior to the year we will not hold the full course, so that those who cannot wait another year for a full course can then decide whether or not to sign up to a course organised by any one of the other seven Warwickshire Branches. Our first taster course will be held this year in Grandborough Village Hall on Sunday November 13th. Attendance fee is a nominal £10, payable by cheque or cash in adavance.
